Conception is the moment when the female released egg form the ovaries and the male sperm fuse to form the initial cells of a future human being. It is easy for some and takes a while for others. I tried for my first pregnancy for slightly over a year.

A woman has a 25-30% chance of conception during each cycle. It sure is a miracle to get pregnant. There is however a few things you can do to increase your chances, and prepare for pregnancy.

Here are a few tips.

Tip 1: Healthy body:
Pregnancy is a big job. It is comparable to manual labor over a few months. Your body needs to be strong enough to do the work of growing a uterus to 500 times its size, grow a baby from the size of a bean to a 3kg weight, have muscles and ligaments stretch among several other changes.
Start by having a medical check up to ensure you are in a good state of health. Have your hormones, reproductive system and your major organs function checked to ensure that all’s working well.

Tip 2: Lifestyle Checkup for both dad and mum
• Diet:
Eat a balanced diet; proteins, carbohydrates and vitamins in the right proportions is great for cell nourishment and function. Do not skip a meal, reproductive cells work best with constant sugar levels.

• Exercise:
Exercising helps your cells absorb nutrients and oxygen. It also helps you keep fit. Choose an exercise you enjoy, it will be fun and easier to do.

• Sleep:
Ensure you have at least six hours of sleep. Rest promotes better organ function.

• Kick away habits:
This would include smoking, alcohol consumption, snacking, use of over the counter meds. You want to keep your system as toxin free as possible.

Tip 3: Study and Work with your cycle
• Start by getting off contraception.
• Learn the cycle to maximize on the ovulation dates as this increases the chance to conceive.
Have sex at least every other day. Infrequent sex weakens the sperms and may limit the number of healthy sperms.
